Swimming Pool Safety Tips

|

Swimming is a fun recreational sport that is enjoyed by all age groups. However, it is critical to know how to be safe while you’re in the water.

The following are important safety tips you should know before spending the day at a private or public swimming pool:

  • Swim in designated areas with lifeguard supervision.
  • If you are swimming in private pool, maintain constant supervision.
  • Always swim with a friend and never swim by yourself.
  • Ensure that everyone in your family learns how to swim well.
  • If you have a pool, secure it with the proper barriers – such as a four-foot high fence or barrier with a self-closing, self-latching gate.
  • Keep rescue equipment – such as life jackets and a hook – nearby.
  • Post CPR instructions and learn the procedures in case of an emergency.
  • Keep a first aid kit poolside.
  • Make sure someone has a cell phone nearby in the event someone must call emergency services.
  • Do not leave objects such as toys that may attract children in the pool or pool area.
  • If a child is missing, check the water first since seconds matter in preventing death or disability.
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Protect your skin by limiting the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10 AM and 4 PM and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at minimum 15.
